The Generation Before Me
2022. Digital Photographs, Toronto, Ontario
While doing The Generation Before Me I did further investigation of who the women in my life learned from the most growing up. I was expecting them to say each other, but surprisingly most of them also said they had to figure things out on their own.
In the series I put some of the portraits together to represent their upbringing, but also included solo portraits to represent themselves, and the woman they chose to become. The group shots are meant to represent unity as women in the family, and their support for each other.
Although I have so many women in my life I too had to learn a few things on my own. The Generation Before Me is meant to inspire young women to learn more about their bodies, and how to take care of themselves with what serves them the best. What we learn should be encouraged to be passed on to our future families because the importance of Women's Health should not be taken so lightly, and we can't continue to be afraid or ashamed to speak about puberty, sexuality, or mental health.
We are the next generation, and we have the potential in eliminating any shame or uneasiness women feel when speaking on Women's Health and our experiences. We have the choice to come together and empower and educate one another.
